VILLAZAN is delighted to announce the upcoming exhibition by Noritoshi Mitsuuchi, "Star Dust", at our Madrid gallery. This showcase features his vibrant, color-filled works with bold brushstrokes that evoke the whimsical perspective of childhood. In this new collection, stars take center stage, serving as the unifying theme across most of the canvases, with each piece offering a glimpse into the artist's boundless imagination.
Born in Osaka, Japan, in 1978, Noritoshi Mitsuuchi studied at Kobe Design University and has been fully dedicated to his art career since 2002. While his work has always resonated with audiences, it was his international success that cemented his reputation as one of the most sought-after contemporary artists among collectors. Renowned for his evocative and unmistakable style, Mitsuuchi’s work combines a childlike simplicity with profound emotional depth. Much like Picasso, he chooses to shed the complexities of advanced techniques he has mastered over the years, embracing the raw, unfiltered vision of a child to let his emotions flow freely onto the canvas. As the artist himself puts it, "The more you strive to perfect your art, the more you lose sight of what truly matters".
At the heart of his work lies the concept of a "mental time journey", a quest to rediscover the nostalgia hidden deep within our souls and the purity of childhood often lost as we grow. Like music, his art aims to stir emotions, standing as a counterpoint to the sensory overload of modern society. Through his creations, he seeks to reconnect viewers with their unique memories and emotions.
Drawing inspiration from fairy tales, Mitsuuchi incorporates symbols such as knights, warriors, wizards, fairies, princesses, princes, and animals, weaving them into his pieces to blur the line between dreams and reality. His work invites viewers to revisit the fantastical worlds of their childhood.
Mitsuuchi’s artistry bridges the unrestrained imagination of youth with the refined techniques of an experienced hand. This harmony allows him to create connections between the past and present, dreams and reality, innocence and sophistication. His ultimate goal is to provide viewers with a moment of introspection, a chance to reunite with their younger selves while imagining the future ahead.
The exhibition "Star Dust" by Noritoshi Mitsuuchi will be on view at VILLAZAN Project Space from January 23 to March 1, 2025.
