VILLAZAN is pleased to present August Vilella's first solo exhibition with the gallery in New York, entitled "Echoes of Silence," featuring new works that explore the deep impact of quietude on the human spirit and delve into the unspoken emotions, hidden depths and resonant echoes that lie in moments of stillness and contemplation.
August Vilella (b. 1986, Spain) is a self-taught painter who creates oil paintings that open dialogue with contemporary and classical art. Working in the Surrealist automatism method, he creates his works without any previous sketches or ideas. Each painting has a unique psychical opening and meaning that reflect the subconscious mind.
The result of this practice evokes a dreamlike aura and a magical, metaphorical and even philosophical language that invites the viewer to reflect. All this iconography is represented with a very refined technique. We can express any feeling and emotion through the eyes... And this is the way that August communicates through his works. However, as an intuitive painter he doesn't know the real reason why his characters have this kind of big and expressive eyes, but he is sure that they are born with them for some reason... They can't talk, so this is their way of communicating with the world. When people look into their eyes, they connect with themselves and with the depth of their own soul.
In the artist's own words "I don't choose my characters... in some way they choose me. And when we remove the will of the artist regarding his creation, each painting becomes a work of art of the world and for the world; a piece of art in which all people can find themselves reflected, and above all, a work of art with a life of its own that wants to be seen, to awaken and to be felt".
August Vilella invites viewers to reflect on the power and beauty of silence in a world filled with noise.
