SETEC (Seoul Trade Exhibition & Convention) 3104 Nambusunhwan-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul
April 18 - April 21, 2024
VILLAZAN is pleased to present its first participation to Art Ono fair in Seoul with a curated selection of new works by internationally-acclaimed contemporary artists Edgar Plans and Yang Hyun Jun.
Edgar Plans (Madrid, 1977), categorized as the most popular Spanish contemporary artist, grew up and is now based with his family in the northern Spanish town of Gijón. After earning a degree in Art History from the University of Oviedo, Plans started to participate in small exhibitions in local galleries. As of today, his works have been exhibited in Museums such as the MOMA Museum in Moscow Russia, the Xiao Museum in Rizhao, China and the S2A Museum in Seoul, South Korea.
Plans oil painting pushes boundaries and combines traditional techniques with modern perspectives. He experiments with diverse styles, from realism to expressionism, creating captivating narratives and evoking deep emotions. Through vivid colors, dynamic compositions and innovative approaches he challenges conventions and invites the viewer to engage in thought-provoking dialogues about social injustices, global warming and other current concerns.
On this occasion, Edgar has presented a series of 8 works that comprise all the topics of his artistic production: from playful canvases whose characters are great heroes fighting against an unfair world, to small drawings representing his favorite characters such as vampires, Goku from Dragon Ball or some other themes like cycling, work or his father's artistic legacy.
Yang Hyun Jun (b. 1980) was born and raised in Busan, Korea. He earned a BFA in Korean Art Painting from Busan Silla University in 1996, and in 2009 a PhD in Fine Arts from Silla University Graduate School of Fine Arts. Hyun Jang's works have been exhibited in multiple solo exhibitions and have participated in a variety of group exhibitions worldwide. Over the past two decades, he has participated in numerous art fairs and received awards for his works.
Drawing upon deeply personal aspects of his mother's life and sacrifices, he expresses feelings of regret and apology through the symbol of a young girl. The presence of the girl in the work establishes a direct connection to the artist's mother, while also embodying the ambiguity inherent in ever-changing representations that transcend time and space.
The essence of his work is characterized by simplicity and clarity. It transcends language barriers, life experiences and cultural backgrounds, as the connection and universal empathy we share revolves around the concept of motherhood. In the 4 works presented on this occasion, the artist represents current themes such as freedom, the passage of time or beauty through recognizable characters such as Thor, Snow White or Alice in Wonderland.
The work "Adult Child (Beauty is only skin deep)" portrays Alice in Wonderland, who holds a dynamite with a timer that marks the passage of time, as in Lewis Carroll's novel, in which the clock reflects the anxiety, demand and sometimes exaggerated paranoia that many adults impose on children. On the other hand, the work "Adult Child (No rose without a thorn)", which portrays Snow White, holds a grenade, as if it were the apple she ate and which would plunge her in a deep sleep.
The two male characters in the works "Adult Child (Thor)" and "Adult Child (3D safety zone)" represent courage, strength and freedom. The character dressed in red is drawing his own cage, while the bird holds the keys that could give him the way to freedom. Thor, however, represents the fight, being the strongest god of all.
